It\u2019s easy to begin your responses with \u2018Yes, I agree with you.\u2019 It\u2019s so easy that everyone does it. The hard part comes next, when you have to elaborate on what you agree with. People lose a lot of marks by not being able to add anything here. The easiest way to get marks here is to paraphrase what the other candidate just said. For higher marks, add to their idea before delivering your own.<\/p>\n
Ask for specific responses<\/b><\/p>\n
In order to gain credits in the Communication Strategies domain, many candidates end their responses by saying \u2018Do you agree with me?\u2019 This is actually rather confusing because the other candidates don\u2019t know which part of your argument you\u2019re talking about, and they don\u2019t even know who you\u2019re talking to.<\/p>\n
Instead of saying \u2018Do you agree with me?\u2019, try \u2018Candidate B, would you like to comment on my suggestion to increase the number of PE lessons?\u2019<\/p>\n
Do not be afraid to change stance<\/b><\/p>\n
Of course, you shouldn\u2019t change your mind whenever someone disagrees with you. This isn\u2019t what communication is really like. However, it\u2019s equally pointless to keep on defending an argument when, deep down, you know you\u2019re not being very convincing. A lot of candidates are worried about being seen as gullible; however, with sufficient reasons to back up a change of stance, it can demonstrate how flexible and confident you are. In addition, it keeps the discussion moving at a good pace rather than getting stuck on a single point.<\/p>\n

The speaking paper is nothing to be scared of. Once you\u2019re familiar with the techniques above, it can actually be the easiest way to add to your overall grade.
